Finally see some substantial stuff yesterday at placement. Went with Joe, my mentor, to the dose assessment clinic where he was assisting the doctor. Seen some patients who need an increase in the amount of methadone they are currently consuming.
Finally saw that much spoken about methadone. All I can say is that I have never seen a medicine of such an awful green. It looks like something a witch will brew in her cauldron. I just feel sick to the stomach when I saw the patients consuming methadone like it is some elixir of life. Absolutely no appetite for lunch after that...
Joe had been brainwashing Rebecca's and my brain these days. He feels that the government should legalise drugs and so do majority of the staff working at the community drugs team. He is already quite furious that some idiots in the parliament want to classify cannabis as class B instead of class C. The question is, should we? I guess it will be a neverending cycle of debates... I did not dare tell him that Singapore's stand on drugs are pretty much like the Americans, towards abstinence and not harm reduction. After all, Joe is a synical person (and he admits that himself).
Have also learnt the differences between methadone and subutex and which is more suitable for which kind of patients.
Looking forward to the ECG lesson on the 15th. An additional bonus actually because there are evidences that patients taking above 120ml of methadone have a longer QT interval. Therefore, the nurses will have to take an ECG reading of patients who are consuming large amount of methadone.
